Biography of Ayatollah Mohaghegh Lahiji
Introduction
Hojatoleslam wal-Muslimeen Mohammad Mohagheghi Lahiji was born in Lahijan in 1910 (1289 SH). He is recognized as the first Shia missionary to the Western world, serving for ten years in Hamburg, Germany as the representative of Grand Ayatollah Borujerdi. He was the first Friday prayer Imam and founder of the Islamic Center of Hamburg.
Education
• Completed primary and secondary education in Rasht and Tehran
• Studied modern sciences at Kamal-al-Molk School and Dar al-Funun
• Mastered French, Russian, Arabic, English, and German
• Migrated to Qom in 1934 (1313 SH), residing at Razaviya Seminary to pursue advanced Islamic studies
• Simultaneously taught mathematics in Mashhad and later astronomy, physics, and natural sciences in Qom for interested seminarians
• Lectured on mathematics at Dar al-Shafa Seminary, where prominent scholars like Ayatollah Morteza Motahhari attended his classes
Teachers
After completing intermediate studies, he joined the advanced jurisprudence classes (Dars-e Kharij) of Ayatollah Sheikh Abdolkarim Ha’eri.
In the Words of Contemporaries
• Ayatollah Seyyed Musa Shubayri Zanjani:
"Mohagheghi taught a unique class combining modern knowledge with seminary studies—even Sheikh Abdol-Javad Jebel Ameli (our Lam'ah instructor) attended."
• Seyyed Hossein Badla:
"Mohagheghi possessed both traditional and modern knowledge. I recall how he voluntarily taught at secular schools to educate youth."
• Ayatollah Fazel Lankarani:
"When Ayatollah Borujerdi sought a qualified envoy to Europe, I proposed Mohagheghi—a pious, eloquent university professor well-versed in contemporary sciences. After meeting Borujerdi, he succeeded brilliantly in Hamburg, establishing its iconic mosque."
Imam of Hemmat Mosque, Tajrish
• In the 1940s (1320s SH), Hemmat Mosque lacked a permanent Imam until Mohagheghi accepted the role.
• Later, at Borujerdi’s request, he departed for Germany in 1950 (1329 SH) to oversee European Muslim affairs.
• His successor, Hojatoleslam Mahmoud Ardakani (son-in-law of Ayatollah Fazel Lankarani), relocated to Tajrish for health reasons but soon transferred to Fatimiyah Mosque, leaving Hemmat without a permanent Imam again.
Demise
Passed away in 1970 (1349 SH) at age 58 and was buried in Abu Hossein Cemetery, Qom.
